What You Need To Know About Emergency Medicine Fellowships
There are two fellowship tracks in Emergency Medicine. There are four ACGME fellowship tracks that lead to additional certification by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM). The ACGME controls the content and sets standards for these programs which include: Toxicology, Hyperbarics, Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Sports Medicine.
There are numerous other Non-ACGME fellowships in Emergency Medicine offering experience and training in other areas of Emergency Medicine including: Emergency Medicine Administration, EMS, International Emergency Medicine, Emergency Medicine Politics (Cal-ACEP), Research, Critical Care, Education and Ultrasound.
The Non-ACGME fellowships are optimally tied to an advanced degree integrated into the fellowship. By incorporating an advanced degree into the fellowship program, the fellow is provided the opportunity to incorporate this schooling into a model that will provide an academic base, practice environment and platform for this educational activity. In addition, the fellowship setting offers an opportunity for shift relief, schedule coordination and benefits packages that makes it easier to coordinate these two academic pursuits than if they were completed as separate programs.
