Congratulations To Our 2021 EMA Spotlight of the Quarter!

Our EMA Provider Spotlight of the Quarter is Susan Urstein, MD!

Med School: Chicago Medical School
Residency: Highland hospital in Oakland CA-Chief Resident

Dr. Urstein has been with EMA since 2018. Ever since the young age of 9, Dr. Urstein knew she wanted to be a doctor when she watched a video about the human reproductive process. She entered medical school with the intent to be an OBGYN, but as she started doing rotations, she realized that she loved the acute care aspects and finally landed on emergency medicine. Dr. Urstein finds the fast pace and problem-solving aspect of emergency medicine satisfying and rewarding: “I love that there are still things in medicine that I haven’t seen and it never gets old.” On her very first day as an attending, Dr. Urstein helped deliver a baby for a woman that had no idea she was pregnant! Outside of work, Dr. Urstein is a single mother with two fantastic teenagers that always keep her on her toes: Abby (16) and Josh (13). “My kids motivate me to continue to work hard and to provide them with the opportunities to become the best humans they can possibly be. I want them to be happy, independent productive members of society that can do some good in this world.” Dr. Urstein’s passions include her dog, spinning, live music, and visiting the beach.

Dr. Urstein is involved in an organization called United in Harmony, a non-profit organization that support’s underprivileged and homeless youth in Southern California. United in Harmony provides an overnight camp experience for kids aged 7-11 twice a year and Dr. Urstein runs the infirmary as their “camp doctor”. Her kids have also been involved ever since they were small, and her daughter is now a camp counselor.
